In 1970s Britain, getting dressed could be an act of rebellion.
Before punk became a Pinterest mood board, it was a rejection of convention. Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s King’s Road shop, SEX, became a centre of the emerging punk scene, selling clothes that deliberately challenged authority. Bondage trousers, torn fabrics, safety pins and provocative graphics turned the wardrobe into something confrontational.
Punk emerged during a period of economic and political unrest, and its DIY aesthetic reflected a generation suspicious of those in positions of power and traditional hierarchies. Westwood’s clothes did not simply dress the movement; they helped give its anger a visual language.
Almost fifty years later, the clothes have changed, but the impulse feels familiar.
Gen Z has inherited punk’s appetite for disruption, only now rebellion can take place on a much larger, and much more digital, stage. From micro-trends and gender-fluid, androgynous styling to deliberately excessive outfits, second-hand fashion and the revival of subcultures and niche aesthetics, dressing can become another way of questioning what society deems as ‘traditional’.
The politics may no longer be safety pins and ‘Anarchy in the U.K.’, but the principle remains: why should we dress the way we are told to?
Perhaps that is punk’s most enduring legacy. Fashion does not have to agree with the establishment. It can mock it, distort it, reinvent it - or simply refuse to abide by its rules.
Vivienne Westwood understood that clothing could make people do a double take. Gen Z seems to have inherited this same instinct.
And maybe, in an era of political polarisation, being unapologetically difficult to define is its own form of rebellion.
